superflow 110 & PTS electronics?

Post by laser3kw »

Hi Guys
long time since I have been here last. I did a search and didn't see anything related. I Have a Superflow 110 and was considering "datalogging". Has anyone applied the PTS unit to a 110? how does it hookup? Will there be auxiliary ports to use velocity probes? What does the screen display look like? would I need anything eles, I see "flo-pro" program discussed. thanks for looking.

The PTS DM is designed to work with a center orifice style flowbench of which the SF110 is not as it has the orifices after the motors. You need to use a temp correction factor with that style.

The PTS DM comes standard with 3 ports active no extra charge to hook up the 3rd port, so you would have static pressure to ~36", CFM (differential pressure) and velocity pressure or water gage up to ~36". The PTS DM can be configured for 100" sensors in PT1 and PT3 also for an additional cost of $75 total

The PTS DM has it's own program which is free for download from this forum for those who purchase a PTS DM, the PTS DM requires no field upgrades when the software is revised, you just download the updated .exe file. So no need to ever send it back for updates like other units on the market.

Hi Bruce, thanks for responding.

does this mean "yes" it will work if the temp correction is applied? Does the PTS do this or can it do this? Do I "uncork" all orifices and unhook & disregard the horizontal manometer for the flow reading. Or can I use the different orifices and skew the program to reflect the correct reading?
The PTS DM comes standard with 3 ports active no extra charge to hook up the 3rd port, so you would have static pressure to ~36", CFM (differential pressure)
I would understand that this means I tee into my vertical manometer (2 ports) and the program calculates the "cfm" flow. The third port is for the velocity probe.

Not saying yes it will work but, probably will work. You would have to make the changes to temp in the program software which could become cumbersome in it's current configuration.

I have not tried it so I'm reluctant to say yes it will work :)

I do not have access to a SF110 to try it out and sorry to say I'm not really inclined to go searching one out to test it as I have more than enough testing to do on PTS products first to meet those needs.

Opening all the holes would more than likely not work as the surface area calculations would not meet reality of flow, this has been run into on another flowbench build I am familiar with that is using 2 orifice holes on one of it's ranges.

So in the end it might work great or it might be a total fail as I have not physically tested it in my shop, my concern is it being a total fail and adding a black mark to this excellent product that we know works GREAT on a PTS style orifice flowbench :)

Hope this all makes sense . . .

The PTS DM has no facility for temperature correction, and that makes it unsuitable where the measurement orifice is located downstream of the vacuum motors.
It should be realized that the temperature correction problem only exists with the SF design of bench, which is really a major design flaw.
With a properly designed ratiometric orifice bench, temperature correction is not required, which completely eliminates a potential source of error and keeps things much simpler.
I would understand that this means I tee into my vertical manometer (2 ports) and the program calculates the "cfm" flow. The third port is for the velocity probe.
Two ports (one channel) measure the differential pressure across what is being tested.
Two ports measure the differential pressure across the orifice.
Two ports measure the differential pressure across the flow probe.
Three channels, six ports total.

Test pressure reading will work fine.
Flow probe will work fine.
Displayed flow measurement will be screwed up, because there is no correction for the additional heat added to the air by the vacuum motors.

Where the exact same volume of air passes through both the test piece, and then the measurement orifice, without any extra heat being added, no temperature correction is required.
Ambient temperature does not matter, because the SAME air flows through both restrictions, and any ambient air temperature variation will effect both pressure drops equally.

That's about it.
Sell the 110 to someone else, and splash the cash on building something bigger and far better.

(thought bubble over MacGyers head)
let's see, I have:
a 6-71 blower and a 8-71 blower
a 7.5hp three phase motor
a 10hp Yaskawa VFD
a synchronous belt drive system
50 ft of 2 x 2 tubing
a welder
a machine shop.........
what should I build today?

Bruce and Tony: Thanks for the great advice and help.
even though it shows only a couple of posts currently, I have been a contributing member for almost 10 years.
and yes I real have all that stuff, I have been sslllowwly preparing for this for years!

Ah I know what I would build!

Sell the SF110 and build a nice digital flowbench out of those parts!

More than enough info on how to do it with whatca got on hand, which I am sure you are aware of :D

Here are links to a couple of previous threads about using big GM roots blowers in a flow bench that may be of some interest.....
