Way back when I did a lot of the 2.0l and 2.3l Fords for Sand Buggies. For the 2.3l we ended up making an insert to go into where the hydraulic lifter went and threaded it and used the adjusters from the 2.0l engines. Then we used the solid lifter cam profile. If I remember we also had to do something about the oiling, but I mean it has been a "few" years.
