Hi man,don't think I'm a slightly mad.....
wath do you think to use an alternative piston vacuum source?
I have some car's engine in my shop,4,6,12 cilinder.....
I think: if I took a 2-3 liter displacement engine, remove the cylinder head, replace it with a very thick plate with reed steel valve,a couple for each cylinder, like a workshop compressor, and ran this device with high power electric motor,I can create a good depression for a workbench?

Idea?
Opinions?
You can insult me! :D

I've seen engines converted to become air compressors but I don't think they produce enough air volume to be used as a flowbench air source.

Thanks Ray,do you think the problem is the cfm and not the h2o depression?
at the end,For 2 litres Engine,@ 3000 rpm made 6000 l\min, 6cubic meter is about 210 cfm.....

Piston compressors are at their best at very high pressures and low flow.
Something like a roots blower would be a much better and more efficient way to "mechanically" compress air.

But a centrifugal blower has the most advantages, and fewest disadvantages for a flow bench.
Among the advantages are small size, steady non pulsing airflow, and potentially quite high efficiency.

What would be perfect, would be a flow bench blower that always generates the same exact test pressure at any flow without needing any extra control system.
And a centrifugal comes closest to that ideal.
