Sealers - Black paper?

Does anybody know anything about the thin black paper that lines the inside of a commercial flow bench? I think it is in there to provide an additional level of sealing and/or to combat porosity in the wood.
What is it called?
Where would I buy it?
Would any particular type of paint do the same thing? Possibly a "marine" paint or varnish?

Older SF type benches were painted with a grey paint on the inside.
The black paper deal is probably for porosity issues. Plus you could laminate the stuff and overlap the paper in the corners.
