Discussion on general flowbench design

Postby mulemotors » Sun Dec 19, 2004 12:47 am

I am looking to build my first bench and start testing some of own parts. I have been reading all I can on building a flow bench, and have been looking for a good vacuum source. This week I came up with a paxton supercharger connected to a 10hp 3 phase motor. I am an auto tech instructor and my shop is equiped with 3 phase so that solved one problem. When I hooked up the motor for the first time we added a 4' long piece of 4" pvc to the intake and checked what it would pull. with the pipe open it pulled 22" of water. Upon restricting the opening and connecting a vacuum gauge it pulled a max of 7in/hg which I converted to 94" of water. Is this going to be to much pull?
Thanks for any help.

It sounds like a very nice setup. I have always wanted to find a centrifugal supercharger to try on my flowbench, but so far they are out of my price range.

The Paxton sounds ideal. One point to watch, they are designed to blow, with the intake at atmospheric pressure. If you use it to create a depression, they can suck oil from the gearbox past the seals. You might need to equalize the pressure between intake and gearbox vent.

See if you can get yourself a 10Hp variable frequency drive to adjust the blower speed. You will then have pretty close to the ultimate flowbench blower.

I am jealous.

Would a blower from a T-bird or GM 3800 motor work??

Mule,
I realize this thread is ancient but I was wondering what the speed of the electric motor was and what over or undrive percentage you used.
Thanks
