One of them that comes to mind immediately is Tony, his bench consists of a single large blowers/vacuum connected to a VFD for speed control. Search the archives for some his posts also have a look at some of the older posts in the Air Movers section.

A single large air blower, or even a supercharger works very well, and has quite a few advantages over using a whole bunch of small noisy very high revving vacuum cleaner motors.
