total noob need you advice on DIY flowbench - need to pick a vac motor

well im ganna build a flow bench this summer and im doing my research and buying my parts. im a total noob at this and i wanna learn. i am looking for a motor and i liked this one.
all the starts are there. what do u guys think about it. and if anyone has built one what have u used? thx alot

I'll be using the Ametek model #115923 (Grainger 4M903). I choose it after comparing the airflow numbers of dozens of different Ametek models on , it seemed to give the best performance of the 120volt models. Before you buy the motors from Grainger, check with several of your local vacuum cleaner repair shops, chances are they'll be able a better price than Grainger especially if you make it clear to them you'll be buying several.

thats a very nice pump, i had not seen it on the online catalogue, i wish it had a thermostat or something tho ill keep looking on the website. i was actually ganna buy it from a vac shop cuz im from canada and i dont feal like having to pay for shipping and customs nice link btw

Hi, also planing my bench, Your blowers look a little pricey to me, I`m planing on using these from

I used six of those same Surplus Center motors. With quite a bit of use, no problems. The current draw is a little higher than the Ametek's shown, but the price is good. Maximum flow with all six running through a 3" flow tube showed just under 600 cfm @ 28" of water.

I have also purchased the motors from them as have a couple of friends and the benches worked well with 8 motors.

Enough to flow a 375 head at 28 inches.

what kind of bearings are in that motor does anyone know, does it have any thermal protection system ?
not like it matters at that price. the reason that these are so cheap is the company that makes them was sold to ametek. im ganna buy mine today probably

I purchased 1 of these to ck it out, it has roller bearings, but do`esnt have thermal protection.

all good thx guys u all rock, as i said im very new to this stuff. do u guys have good books or tutorials or mag articles that u can recoment me before i start porting heads. i traded a heat exchanger for w/a ic for a old vw 8v head to practice porting so all comments are more then welcome

i have been having alot of trouble finding 1/8" brass tubing to build the manometer so i just went and bought cooper, does it really matter?

The brass tubing is stiffer and has a thinner wall but doubt any of that matters much. BTW, brass tubing can found at almost any hobby shop, it comes in 12 inch lengths.

i went to the only hobbie shop that i know in town and they didnt have, so i started calling specialized piping places. even if i have to pay 30% restocking fees. i found a online hobbie shop that has it

Hardware stores around here have the brass tubes.

What are you using them for on a manometer?
