oil based paint

Discussion on general flowbench design

Everyone has been using latex paint, is there any reason why I should use this besides oil? I have already purchased an oil based primer and paint, and need to paint my valve chamber so I can put in my orifice panel. I would think that the oil based would hold up a little better in a shop enviromonment.

Actually I would think a good latex paint would hold up better in a shop environment because many shop chemicals are oil or petroleum based and so might soften up oil based paints. That said however, I don't think that's really a very serious concern, if oil based paint was what I had on hand, that's what I'd use but if I were buying paint, I'd choose latex.

After using latex I would try an all surface enamel that you can get at Sherwin williams. They say it is chemical resistant. (oil based) My complaint with latex is, it is not very durable and it took forever for it to dry. Of course it sat out side in the shop during this winter so that could be part of the drying problem. Still I would go for something more durable.

When painting inside, I cannot see why the surface needs to be durable or resist anything apart from just air leakage ? Surely anything that readily soaks into timber and effectively seals it would be perfectly suitable. Pink oil based wood primer should be ideal.

My bench is constructed from 25mm MDF and is painted outside (only) with clear Estapol. That is the clear stuff used on wooden floor boards and parquetry, it makes an extremely tough and hard wearing surface. Marine varnish would probably be o/k too, as well as some of the epoxy paints.

One day I plan to glue some Kitchen laminate onto the bench top, but have not done that yet.

I went ahead and took the oil based back and got some latex. Inside it really doesn't matter, just so long as the top has a good surface...maybe I will put a piece of stainless on the top later down the road.
