Hello could you explain me how a flowbench of the type superflow 110 functions

The main difference between the 110 and a machine like the 600 is the location of the motors and the orifice plate.

On the 110 the motors are between the object being tested and the orifice plate. The pressure drop is measured between atmospheric and the pressure on the bottom side of the orifice plate. Range changes are handled by various combinations of orifice plugs.

One complication of the 110 style bench is that the temperature inside the bench quickly becomes a factor in your flow test, and you need to track the temperature difference on either side of the motors.

If you run the bench manually and control your test pressure with the flow control valves, you need to record temps at all lift points, and you want to move quickly to nail down a reading and move along to the next one. If you play around with flow balls, flags, or a pitot at a given lift point, you will see temps change in a very short time. Those motors get HOT fast.

Running a 110 style bench with an electronic interface and software to control flow and record your readings, the temperaature differential is not as great, and the software calculates the temp adjustment in your readings for you.

With the Mercdog/MSD/SF-600/etc. ... style benches, Temp differential does not appear to be a factor on intake testing, although ambient temp would still be a factor. On exhaust testing, I think the difference between ambient temperature and bench temp. may need to be addressed. (?)

I feel the same way about exhaust tests. I haven't calculated or applied temp adjustments to my results but I can't help but feel they need to be done. Heated air is passing through that direction.

Harold Betties of Superflow has told me that the bench will still be accurate on the exhaust side of a SF 300/600 type bench as the Orifice will see the same hot air as the test part that has the air passing through it. Again a Ratiometric deal. The inclined scale will read the correct percentage.

The actual cfm might be different vs the colder intake but that is "calibrated out" by the different flow values for the exhaust.

If you were trying to test at "Standard Conditions" a correction would definately have to take place.

I still think a calibration plate is an absolute necessity or a KNOWN "Test Head" to compare with over time.

Laminar benched MUST have corrections applied to them religiously or they will have errors.

As I understand it, temperature is an issue with the SF110 because in intake mode, the air first goes through your test piece, then the motor where it picks up heat and finally through the measurement orifice and because the air going through the orifice is warmer than the air going through the test piece, it's less dense which skews the reading so corrections need to be applied.

With the larger Superflow benchs and the MSD/Mercdog types, the air goes through the test piece then the orifice and finally the motors thus the air through the test piece and orifice will be more or less the same temperature.

On the SF110 you must apply a correction factor because with the motor in between the orfice plate and the test piece the air travelling through the test piece and the orfice plate are at different tempertures. The correction is easy and it's not a big deal. I have a motor controller, FlowCom and a computer to record data and do corrections on my bench so it's very easy. Having the motor controller is great too because it slows the motors way down when you are opperating under low flow conditions. The temp differential on my bench now rarely exceeds about 15 degrees farenheit.
