Busy week here. The heads are on the motor and the motor is installed. Finished up the install today. Tomorrow will be the first test start. Hope I didn't overlook anything. I hate surprises. Eager to get the motor down the track for break in and early testing. Only two weeks left in the season unless they offer something in December.

Got it running. Oil pressure good. No water or oil leaks. Idle vacumn around -10" due to the overlap and perhaps that open plenum torker II. Unable to track test this weekend due to rain. Will try next weekend.

"We test what we flow" is the PTS motto. :D

Here is a 2 minute video of the start up after retorque on head bolts following two hot/cool down cycles. Pipes are running clean. Wastegates have been dialed down to 6 lbs gating.

We built a similar dual inlet style hat for a Mechanical FI set-up (corvette efi) back in 1976. The bonnet worked surprisingly well with the factory venturi type air meter. Love those Avanti and Lark engines.

Thanks guys, that hat was version 1 and it has worked so well I haven't upgraded. I have more money in Bruce's hat that this one. :D

Update: Tested yesterday in the 1/8 at RDW and motor ran fine with low level boosting. Just glad to get it all from flowbench to track in under 10 days time in the end here. I want repost all the flow data but here is a recap of where port 4 stood from the bench.

There is some swing among all the ports and weakest one is port 3 which gave 168.8 @ .500 lift and fast centerline of 340 fps. I should have reflowed but had to move on.

SSR came in at 332, 353, 353 on left to center to right of apex.

And the PRt came in at:

So how did the track dyno perform. Car ran the following with
total timing held to 25 degrees, 73/85 jetting, no PV.

Run1: 1.5769 4.4391 6.8196 @ 104.17

Car launched at steady 5 lbs boost. On the converter a long time because other guy would not stage the second bulb. Playing games I guess. Avg boost holding 6 lbs with max of 7 at the line. Made the shift around 5400 which is the choke point according to Pipemax on the cam. Lost my new breather cap. Almost a record, and the best todate for this pressure. The deceased 298 took 12 lbs of boost to pull this low an et for the 1/8.

Slowed some and the tree started as soon as I staged so launch boost was mere 2 lbs. Averaged around 5 lbs with a climb to 6 lbs at line.

Slowed even more and got a bad pop on deceleration.
Hadn't changed timing or jetting. Did make a compression check on number 7 and came in at 150 psi after 6 strokes.

Pipemax predicted 155 psi with a weak dynamic compression due to this Salt flats cam profile.

Burn out was poor as the line lock is not holding brake pressure and the car moves out early and shifts around, etc.
Just a poor launch, and boost never went higher than 5 lbs. So I suspect or hope it is a exhaust leak gasket that has opened up and is prematurely bleeding of exhaust turbo pressure. I have seen this before in the past and this plumbing has 14 exhaust gasket points for hot gases to leak.
Will know more this week as I make a complete inspection of compression, lash, and plumbing sealing.

Overall I am very pleased with the powerband and results. The ports are still on the conservative side as far as volume with an average of 141 cc and from what I can tell the high fps speeds are not killing the power.

Looks good. Makes me go back and forth from wanting to learn head design in a NA engine to just wanting to go fast and putting a turbo on it.

Found the problem for the mph drop off and et swing. Blown manifold gasket on passenger side. Will fix this and move on for more testing. Down the road these manifolds are going to have to be resurfaced for a better seal. I am very happy with the head testing. Was fearful the air speeds were to fast down the middle. In bill jones manual he did say anything over 300 is a gift from God. As for the single channel. Apparently it has its design purpose for swirl or whatever bias it is offering the cylinder. And I was concerned about the high cam overlap of 24 degrees @ .050 reference. From what I can surmise, it did not hender the spool up or the cylinder filling.

This was one big leak by the third run. As far as data it gives a good coorelation of mph to pressure.

7 lbs can offer 104 mph, 6 lbs is good for 102.5 and 5 steady lbs is 100. Sort of like bench flowing at higher pressures.

just some very basic BallPark calculations

170 CFM times .257 times 8 Cylinders = 349.5 HP

180 CFM times .257 times 8 Cylinders = 370.1 HP

so from the 400 to 420 HP
minus the 350-370 HP
leaves the rest of the HP gains to the Turbo

thats if the DA Feet was 2000 ?

Thanks Larry M for the feedback. And thank you Larry C for your guidance on the pitot tube especially the centerline fps focus. In fact special thanks to all who have added insight on this effort. I am so happy to be back at the track. I enjoy watching but it doesn't give the satisfaction of doing your own work and driving the product. It was cold here today but I got under the car and repaired the leak. And made a spot check on number 1 compression an it came in at 155 psi. I am going to try and make a full quarter past this weekend if some global warming weather comes in. And I can't wait to get started on my cut up head research and build up a new 299 motor for next year with thicker walls and the Howard rods.

Ok.....I'm going to as for some PipeMax data.

First, run the HP from ET slip in pipemax and get the numbers.

Then set the Ve on the main screen so that HP in the LOW prediction matches the ET slip HP number and post the results....PLEASE :D
