Stevenford,
are you building a motor to the same specs as old BTCC rules , 2Litre and 8500 max revs .Is it a 3SGE type late series Lexus.

I have a question for you Larry. I have an engine build coming up. 2.5L V6 engine for Rallycross. Owner wants 300hp at the crank to be competitive. But he also wants a really wide torque range so he doesn't have to change gear so much! The rules allow supercharging so that's the way we're going. The engine produces 230hp N/A. Now what I want to know is how can I get some numbers on what exhaust valve area/csa to shoot for? I also need to calculate header diameter specs and a "shorty" length. The supercharger takes ~20hp to drive so the exhaust side needs to actually support 320hp.
What ways can I use pipemax to guide me in this? Should I input for the 230hp case and use some sort of "rule of thumb" to multiply the given csa's and diameters?
Or should I input for a 320hp N/A and use those csa's/diameters and then do another case for 230hp and use those lengths?

In the Pipemax I have there is a drop down box for Shorty Header + Muffler

I think you are asking, do you change the VE to match the higher HP output when you boost engines

I don't know, but I suspect, No?

Will put this here because I am using Pipemax and ET For Dragsters to track my engine and chassis behavior. I raced Friday nite and yesterday for the first time in 4 weeks. Made a few minor changes. Got a cold air filter line connected to the turbo. Got the cabling link for the front end connected to control the lift. Sealed some turbo plumbing leaks around the manifold connections and intake manifold block plate area. And installed new Goodyear 31.5 X 14.5 X 15 tires. Air tempertures were warmer in low 80's for testing but track conditions were much better than early March. Race weight came in 2555 as of this Friday.

Here's the data for the two days. VMP track Friday evening.

Run 1: 1.595 4.676 7.275 @ 94.18 9.531 11.454 @ 116.9

I bought a Canon camera and videoed the gauges. This run was a max of 8 lbs with about 5 lbs launch on the 3400 stall.
Finish line rpm close to 6000 and shift made at 5000 according to the tach video. Shift light coming on at the same time but it has a 5300 rpm pill.

Run 2: 1.519 4.477 6.992 @ 97.05 9.184 11.055 @ 120.03

After the first run I found the boost reference hold off line decoupled from the gate port so I made a reinstall and clamped the line. Left regulator hold off alone. Video showed high steady 10 lbs boost on top end. Powerglide shift coming in around 5100. Converter pull back rpm going to around 4400 so the high gear pull range is 4400 to 6000.

Run 3: Added a quarter turn to the hold off regulator. Boost went to a high of 12 or 13 judging from the video. Got a good spool up launch of 8 + lbs.

1.454 4.300 6.730 @ 100.26 10.679@ 122.85

A new ET and speed record for the Studebaker. Cam is stude regrind with .422 max lift. and smooth idle. 110 LSA installed straight up. Heads are still the winter project heads with the 1.780 intake valves. My old NEC computer crashed and damaged all my photos and excell flow data sheets, etc and I haven't had the time to salvage the flow data on these heads. Will post them up when I can.

I retested yesterday Saturday at Richmond. All runs in the 1/8 at this Top ET event.

Run 1: 1.4941 4.3332 6.7572 @ 101.31

Wife had the video camera but the memory boost gauge showed 12 lbs boost. Relited by .009 Best mph todate.

Run 2: 1.4557 4.2882 6.7205 @ 100.92

Another relite by .0193 Errrh!!!

Round 1: Dialed a 6.72

1.4897 4.3399 6.7790 @ 100.60

Put to much delay in the box. Big Chief Pontiac wins the round. Margin of defeat @ .0396 Pontiac runs 6.1214 on a 6.09 @ 112.36

Warm weather but we had a blast. Larry M. I know you are busy but if you can critique this motor and track data in Pipemax or Et Anaylst please. I will try and host up a video link of the gauges. My new computer is a Dell with Vista and still learning the system. I miss windows 98.

And here is the Saturday 6.72 @ 100.92 run. Memory boost went to 12 lbs. Air temp @81

Hey good movies. This is better than going to the drags. You have a neat car! Everybody has a Camaro. What is neat is it does not matter how fast you go everybody says "holy crap that's a fast Studebaker!" Now if you did have a Camaro everybody would say "Should have been in the nines!" I love your car!!!

Thanks guys. I promised my wife this would be my last project toy. And she graciously supports my efforts. Here is the last video. Getting to know vista beter with the book Vista for dummies. Finding my stuff easier now. Really like the movie maker section because I can freeze any section and study the sequench. Looks like the launch keeps uncovering my oil pickup tube and I need a back door baffle to limit the rise. Got a good spool up on this run too and max boost holds to 12 lbs. Max rpm appears to be hitting 6150 to 6200. Tighening the gate hold off regulator helped. Hope my hp is around 400. I think I am at the limit on the lbs of air this turbo can move but it seems to be operating in a very efficent part of the map. Just don't have a compressor map to really know. This block is at 3.625 bore and 3.625 stroke. Building up a 3.680 by 3.875 motor for the future though. And another set of heads to go with it.

Hot summer here. My turbos are off the motor for inspection and upgrade. Too hot for them anyway. I raced last week with the 330 motor and carb only (NA). I put together a single primary and collector system using "on shelf" stuff here. It went a best of 12.23 @ 113.77. BUT, I would like to better understand Pipemax to see if what I put together is close or off base still.

Now in Pipemax there are 8 selections for headers. Which menu selection do I pick? Here is a view of the stude factory manifold. Center section is sharing two exhaust ports. Do I consider the section lengths in the manfold as part of the single primary length? What do you do with the OD size diameter Pipemax selects for you when that size OD is not available? Do you still go with the Piipemax recommend lengths? It would seem a change in diameter is going to require a length tune change. Goal is to get the best or closest recommendation for single primary plus single collector that bolts to the outlet of the above manifold. Outlet of the manifold is 2 inch. With the glide and dragster tires the 60 ft time is hurting so needs more low end torque exhausting if possible. Thanks.

Tom,
Are you running the stock manifolds and just want PipeMax to estimate your HP etc. If so, then you would probably want to choose shorty header with muffler. Shorty headers are more like the stock exhaust manifold.

Now if you want Pipemax to estimate what the dimensions should be for a set of headers you want then choose race header only and use the calculate link at the top and then choose calculate header and exhaust system specs. That will give you the specifications for building your headers.

You Studebaker engine is so much like a 331 Cadillac engine I and a friend built when in high school. The headers only had 3 tubes on each side. I welded them together with a stick welder so you can imagine how the welds looked.
