Here is a little tip I do when testing valve designs. I machined a valve stem from alum and threaded the end. I then install a piece of solid round pvc in place of a valve head. I can then chuck this up in my lathe and turn a head design for testing. Very cost effective for testing "what-if's", once I have a design that works I then can machine/grind the same design on a valve blank.
